Meter Point Administration Numbers What Do They Mean?
A Meter Point Administrator Number (or MPAN) is a 21 digit reference number used in Great Britain to uniquely identify electricity supply points at various types of domestic and non-domestic premises. This method of identifying electricity supplies was introduced in 1998 in order to simplify administration and make it simpler for consumers to switch energy supplier, but what do these individual MPAN components mean?
Profile Type/ Class
Where properties are not equipped with half hourly meters, the profile type provides the energy supplier with an expectation as to how energy will be consumed at the property throughout the day. Depending on the scale and type of property the 2 digit profile type component will range from 01-08, with each variant describing the expected usage trend. If the supply in question is in fact half-hourly capable, the profile type will be 00.
Meter Time-Switch Code
The Meter Time Swith Code (or MTC) is a 3 digit component, which provides information on the register capabilities of the supply meter. Many meters have varying capabilities such as a single rate, a day and night split and even seasonal settings.
Lime Loss Factor
The Line Loss Factor is used to calculate the related Distribution Use of System (DUoS) charges for the MPAN. The figure reflects both the amount of distribution infrastructure used to supply the exit point and the amount of energy lost during the process, for example through heating of cables and transformers.
Great Britain is divided into fourteen distribution areas. For each area a single company, the distribution network operator, has a licence to distribute electricity from the National Grid. This figure is dependent upon the region in which the property is situated.In addition to the distribution network operators noted above who are licensed for a specific geographic area there are also independent distribution network operators (IDNO). IDNOs own and operate electricity distribution networks which are mostly network extensions connected to the existing distribution network, e.g. to serve new housing developments.
The unique identifier (also know as Meter Point ID Number) is a unique number within the distribution area specific to the actual metering point.
The final 3 digit component of the MPAN is calculated from the Distributor ID and Meter Point ID Number to provide a check digit that other systems can use to validate the both numbers.
